Southern Ocean Lodge
No picture is quite going to do this place justice. We were met at Kangaroo Island's tiny airport by one of the lodge's staff and driven to the south-west corner of the island. After 45 minutes we turned off the road onto a dust track that took us down to the coast. After 6kms we turned again through security gates and 2.5kms later we stopped outside a truly remarkable oasis hanging off the cliffs and looking across an unspoilt bay onto the southern ocean.
Cue the wow-ometer!!
We entered a vast room overlooking the coastline. We were handed a glass of chilled bubbly and introduced to the staff who would be looking after us. This is an all-inclusive resort; the bar and the wine cellar are ours to raid at all times of the day or night; even the minibar and all its delights are included. We relaxed for a while just taking in our surroundings before wandering into the dining area for a superb four course dinner.
Describing our suite is not easy. There are just 21 rooms here, each one overlooking the ocean. The rooms are arranged in a long arc. No room is overlooked by or can see any other room and privacy is therefore assured. The ocean facing wall is entirely glass with motorised blinds and as we discovered in the morning opening them as dawn breaks provides a truly breath-taking sight. The Southern Ocean Lodge has only been here for two years so everything is modern, up-to-date and pristine. The rooms, or rather suites are stunning. The sleeping area with its huge en-suite wet room containing walk-in shower, double-ended bath and twin basins is complimented by a his and hers walk-in closet. Then there is the sunken lounge area with huge swivel chairs and a sofa and sliding doors that open out onto a private terrace from which you can just gaze at the ocean view. This is serious luxury.
